
This course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge, skills, and orientations that are necessary for the practice of counseling and other psychological interventions. It introduces an understanding of the basic stages in the counseling process and their major theoretical bases. It will provide basic counseling skills to students by using multi-sensory, cognitive, and experiential learning activities. The course also examines the impact of one’s unique person as a “therapeutic presence” along with the appreciation of the cultural context of the client’s situation. The course also discusses the roles, functions, and ethical considerations involved in implementing psychological intervention.
At the end of the course, students are expected to:
1. Demonstrate a working understanding of the basic knowledge and skills in counseling including basic concepts, principles, and processes.
2. Identify the principles and goals of the stages of counseling and their major theoretical approaches and be able to differentiate an approach from the others.
3. Demonstrate essential clinical knowledge and skills through actual individual counseling sessions.
4. Discuss the ethical and legal aspects in the practice of the counseling profession.
5. To be conscious about one’s personal strengths and limitations as a counselor and continuously develop the human qualities of compassion, caring, sensitivity, objectivity, and authenticity.
